Prototype About
OUR DATA, IN CONTEXT

Know what you're looking at.

We're building a clearer view of internet trends. Here's what the available data can tell us, what it cannot, and how to interpret TrendCoda's results.

PROTOTYPE
TrendCoda is not showing live trends yet.

All topics, scores, charts, categories, and regional selections currently shown on the homepage are illustrative examples, not data collected from Google, YouTube, or Bluesky. A Bluesky collector exists for manual developer preview only; it is not publishing results.

01 / SOURCES

Where trend signals come from

Our integrations have different levels of availability. We only claim the coverage each source actually provides.

Google Trends

Planned

What it can show: selected search queries experiencing a recent rise in interest, in supported countries and regions and available time windows.

What it cannot show: every Google search, a complete view of what everyone is searching for, or necessarily an absolute count of total interest. An absence from its trending list does not mean a topic is unpopular.

Location-based trend views depend on Google's supported regions. A worldwide view would require clearly defined aggregation rather than assuming one national feed represents the planet.

YouTube

Planned

What it can show: videos surfaced in the supported YouTube popular-video charts and available regions. The Data API's mostPopular chart currently draws from music, movies, and gaming content.

What it cannot show: every viral video across YouTube, all Shorts, personalized recommendations, or every kind of trending conversation. A video missing from a chart may still be widely viewed or discussed.

YouTube replaced its former broad Trending list with category-specific discovery in 2025. Category and regional availability can change, so our coverage labels will reflect the data actually returned.

Bluesky

Developer preview

What it can show: topics included in Bluesky's publicly accessible trending-topic response, with source-specific ordering.

What it cannot show: private activity, all conversations, verified engagement growth, or a reliable U.S.-versus-worldwide breakdown from that trends endpoint alone.

We treat this feed as platform-wide with unspecified geography. Its provisional API interface and coverage may change.

02 / INTERPRETATION

What our labels mean

Trending Now

A view of topics receiving notable attention in the sources we can legitimately observe. It does not mean we can see the entire internet.

Breaking Out

Topics showing stronger signals between comparable observations. Early momentum is an indicator, not a prediction or a guarantee of future popularity.

U.S. and Worldwide

Coverage depends on each provider. We won't present a platform-wide feed of unspecified geography as a verified global measurement, or label it U.S.-specific without evidence.

Scores and movement

A rank change describes movement within one comparable source list. It is not necessarily a percentage change in people, searches, views, or engagement.

03 / FRESHNESS

Updates, outages, and missing data

We're initially planning to check permitted sources about every six hours once automated collection is launched. That schedule is a target, not a statement that the current prototype refreshes automatically or that each source updates at the same rate.

When live collection begins, each feed should show when we actually observed it. If a provider is unavailable, we intend to identify stale information instead of silently presenting older results as new. Some trends may occur and disappear between collection times.

04 / OUR ROLE

Clear about inputs. Careful about conclusions.

TrendCoda aims to organize permitted public signals, identify changes within comparable observations, and give readers useful context. Different platforms measure different things, so search interest, video charts, and social conversation should not be treated as interchangeable measures of popularity.

We'll explain the types of signals behind our displays, where they're available, and their important limitations. We do not publish our exact internal ranking weights, detection thresholds, or proprietary implementation. Any displayed metric should still have a meaningful definition that users can understand.

TrendCoda is an independent project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Google, YouTube, or Bluesky. Links to official source documentation are provided for verification. Source availability and policies may require us to modify or remove features.
